Albemarle field hockey shuts out Western Albemarle

With a big night from Amanda Warlick, Albemarle’s field hockey team managed to shut out Western Albemarle 3-0, picking up a key Jefferson District victory in the process.

Warlick scored twice and the Patriots picked up another goal from Caroline Jones, but they had to battle for all three of those tallies.

“Western is a great team and was a very active defense to play against,” said Albemarle coach Brittany McElheny. “Our girls got scrappy and knocked in goals.”

Caroline Hughlett and Caitlyn Sanford each registered assists.

Jones’ goal put the Patriots on the board first and Warlick tacked on her first before halftime to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead at the break.

Neither team managed to put a ton of shots on goal, which made midfield play particularly important. Albemarle’s Morgan Coleman checked in with four saves on the night while Western’s Addie Patterson and Emily Sposato combined for four saves.

Albemarle may not have had a ton of shots on goal, but they did manage to create a lot of opportunities and with the Patriots’ defense on the back end stepping up, the Patriots were in a good spot.

“Tonight we were able to create a lot of offense and our defense and goalies had a lot of stops to hold a feisty western team to a shutout,” McElheny said.

Albemarle faces a tough back-to-back week with Charlottesville on the road Thursday while Western will look to bounce back on the road against Louisa Thursday.
