Albemarle field hockey shuts out Charlottesville

Albemarle’s field hockey team just kept at it.

Then finally, with 3:16 left, Anna Murray broke through, notching a goal to lift Albemarle past Charlottesville 1-0, vaulting the Patriots to 6-1 on the year.

“Charlottesville held really strong defensive pressure inside the 30,” said Albemarle coach Brittany McElheny. ”Although we were creating a lot of offense they did a good job of limiting our shot opportunities.”

Part of that was the Black Knights’ Ashlyn Cherrix, who helped Charlottesville turn away a pack of Albemarle shots along with keeper Casey Casarez who finished with eight saves. The Patriots drew six short corners on the night with that relentless offensive approach. They needed every bit of it to counteract the Black Knights’ energy.

“It’s a game with the strongest energy I have seen in Charlottesville in a long time from both sides,” McElheny said. “Our girls did a great job defensive marking free hits and connecting passes. I saw everyone of girls do something new tonight that they have been working on all season.”

Albemarle and Charlottesville both get a week off before the Black Knights host Louisa Tuesday and Albemarle hosts Powhatan the same night.
