Albemarle field hockey edges Western

Western Albemarle and Albemarle field hockey had to wait a few days to lock up because of severe weather last week, but the game was fitting for a rivalry clash between two of the area’s best field hockey programs.

Albemarle prevailed 2-1 over the Warriors, scoring off a corner opportunity setup by Claire Boyer with Maggie Lynn knocking it in to give the Patriots a decisive goal in a back-and-forth defensive struggle.

The Patriots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second half when when Kaley Maynard scored off a Caroline Hughlett feed, but Western answered quickly with a goal from Mallory Green five minutes later that equalized. That set the stage for Lynn’s game-winner with 8:30 to play.

The win pushes the Patriots to 5-0 on the season and they’ll face a quick turnaround with a clash Tuesday night against Charlottesville. Western will also play another game Tuesday as the Warriors host Louisa County.
