Albemarle baseball storms past Monticello

Early returns are looking pretty good for Albemarle baseball.

Behind a one-hit effort from Alex Bingler on the mound and an explosive offensive night from the entire Albemarle lineup, the Patriots beat Monticello 12-2.

An already productive offensive night got a big boost from a Gordon Duval grand slam in the sixth that helped the Patriots end it early, as they reached the 10-run rule later in that inning when the Mustangs walked in the final run.

Alex Duval and Adam Schantz led the offensive explosion with Schantz going 3-for-4 on the night with three runs scored while Duval went 2-for-3. Austin Bowen knocked in three runs from the No. 5 spot in the lineup and Jason Breen and leadoff man Will Coleman each had doubles. Nick Knight also chipped in an RBI.

Bingler threw four innings and struck out nine while surrendering the single earned run and just one hit. Knight took over for the final two innings and struck out three while not allowing a hit or a walk.

The Mustangs’ lone hit came from Ethan Roach and scored Kavan Wills while Brady Clore scored Monticello’s other run.

Albemarle has now beaten Fluvanna County, Orange County and the Mustangs to get out to a solid start in Jefferson District play.  The Patriots head into spring break now before returning April 11 to host Harrisonburg. Monticello will try and bounce back Thursday against Louisa County at home at 6:30 p.m.
