With Jayla Davis out with a broken hand, St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team knows things are going to change.

“We’ve got to change the way we play,” said STAB coach Phil Stinnie. “We have to start playing inside out and we have two or three capable inside players that will make it a lot easier on Brianna (Tinsley) because everybody is going to focus on Brianna.”

On Friday night in the LIS quarterfinals, that largely went to plan as the Saints beat St. Margaret’s 63-30 behind a big effort from two of those post players who are stepping up.

STAB’s Sierra Smith finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds while Vanessa Woodfolk scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Saints. Alex Greer also stepped up with six rebounds.

“Sierra the last two games has really stepped up so we’ve just got to keep her momentum going and Vanessa is coming along,” Stinnie said. “She understands that she has to step up.”

Tinsley put together a strong night with 11 points, five assists and five steals while Jovia Winkey scored eight points. Khailon O’Connor with 12 to lead St. Margaret’s.

The Saints now turn their attention toward the LIS semifinals, where they’ll square off with Trinity Episcopal.

Covenant girls advance past Collegiate

Covenant’s girls basketball team ran it right back with Collegiate Friday night just two days after playing the Cougars in the Eagles’ regular season finale. It was essentially the exact same result Friday in the LIS tournament quarterfinals as Covenant won 63-52 just  days after winning 62-47.

Emily Maupin led the Eagles with a massive double double, checking in with 33 points and 26 rebounds in addition to three steals and three assists. Senior Sara Meakem poured in 20 points including four 3-pointers and also dished out five assists.

Freshman Ella Dalton stepped up on the boards too with a 10-rebound effort while also chipping in five assists and two steals. She also had just a single turnover from the point guard spot. Briana Boland had nine rebounds as the Eagles pulled down 56 boards on the day.
