Woodberry wins 2015 VISAA indoor track title, Davis with huge day for FUMA

Woodberry Forest is back on top.

The Tigers pulled off a second-straight VISAA indoor track and they had to work for it in large part because of an incredible multi-faceted performance by Fork Union’s Drake Davis. Woodberry held off the Blue Devils by 12.5 points for the title in Richmond Saturday.

Drake Davis won the 300-meter, the high jump, the long jump and placed fourth in shot put, a startling performance soured only by an apparent disqualification for a false start in the 55-meter prelims. Davis accounted for a boatload of points in a variety of disciplines and nearly helped Fork Union pull off the championship.

Woodberry’s depth carried the day though as Michael Davenport finished as the runner-up in the 55-meter dash and took fourth in the long jump along with a runner-up finish in the 300-meters. Behind Davenport in the 55-meter sprint, Zach Roderick and Nathaniel Tyrell took fifth and sixth for the Tigers while Patrick Shea took third in the 300-meters. Cameron Finley took third in the 1000-meter for the Tigers.

The Tigers picked up huge points in the relays, winning the 4×200, 4×400 and taking third in the 4×800. They created some much needed separation from Fork Union in the pole vault too, with David Yoo winning the title, Ben Foley taking third and Shep Sims finishing fourth while Fork Union failed to score in the event.

Foley also added an eighth in the triple jump while Ryan Grady won that event.

Jack Claiborne had a strong all around day with a third place in the 55-hurdles, a third in the high jump and a seventh in the long jump. Behind Claiborne in the hurdles came sophomore Joseph Stephenson in fourth and Thomas Radke in seventh.

Brady Logan took second in the shot put and Jack Sari put together a fifth place throw.

For Fork Union, Davis was far from the only star. Alex Lomong won a pair of titles in the 1000-meter and 1600-meter races while Peter Lomong won the 500-meter event and took third in the 1600.

O’Neil Combs had a monster day with a third place in the 55-meter and in the long jump as well as a fourth in the triple. Rashaad Bruce also made a mark in the jumps, taking sixth in the long jump while finishing as the runner-up in the triple.

Rounding out the bulk of the Blue Devils’ scoring was Julian Yescas’ fifth place in the 3200-meter, Preston Durocher’s eighth place in the 55-hurdles, John Singleton’s fourth in the high jump and Daniel Bamisile’s sixth place in the shot put.

The Blue Devils’ relay teams took second in the 4×400 and sixth in the 4×800.

Covenant’s Jon Dyke also put together a solid day with a personal best in the 1600 that was good for ninth place in the state.
