William Monroe powers past Skyline

After enduring a heartbreaker against Brentsville last week, William Monroe had to get back on track this week to keep their playoff hopes in tact.

The Dragons delivered, rolling 41-27 over Skyline on the road.

William Monroe jumped out to a 27-17 halftime team lead thanks in large part to another huge night on the ground from Dupree Rucker. Rucker rushed for 234 yards and four touchdowns 35 carries including a 47-yard sprint. He was instrumental in a wild William Monroe drive that ate up 13 minutes and 37 seconds of the second half, taking up the entire third quarter and part of the fourth and included a pair of fourth down conversions. It ended with a Jared Knights sneak for a touchdown and a 34-17 lead over Skyline.

The Dragons cashed in on all four of their red zone trips as a team, a marked improvement from the Brentsville game where at least one critical drive stalled and resulted in a turnover on downs. Monroe struggled a bit on third down, going 3-for-10 but they were tremendous on fourth, converting four of their five fourth down attempts in the game.

Knights was efficient at quarterback, going 6-for-7 for 55 yards including three catches for 28 yards by Logan Barbour.

Defensively, Jeremy Savoie came up with a late interception to help ice the game, the contest’s lone turnover.

William Monroe (3-4) will hit the road again Friday against Warren County.
