William Monroe out-runs Madison in girls hoops

The William Monroe – Madison rivalry was rather lopsided Friday night as the Dragons toppled the Mountaineers 56-29.

Coach Phillip Lamb said before the game that jumping out early would be a key to success, and he could not have been more right. The Dragons leapt out to a 17-5 first quarter lead and never looked back.

Pouncing early set the tone for Katelyn Roach and company throughout the rest of the contest, winning each quarter throughout. Roach led all scorers with 16, including four buckets from beyond the arc, Shaunterica Cochran poured in 11, while floor general Alex Cave tallied eight in a balanced attack for William Monroe – all but two players registering at least two points.

The Dragons pressured point guard Jordan Aylor full court from the get-go. William Monroe’s pressure defense and fast-paced points off of turnovers and defensive rebounds was too much for Madison to stifle. The Dragons forced 19 Mountaineer turnovers.

Top scorers for Coach Johnson’s squad included Aylor and Rachael Strahan with 9 a piece, Whitney Frazier with 5, and Caitley Ford, Lauren Walthall, and Renee Lucas all chipped with 2.

Saturday William Monroe (1-1) will travel to face a Luray squad that defeated Madison 47-41 on Wednesday.

Madison (0-2) will look to capture their first win at Warren County on Wednesday.
