Western’s boys knock off Orange

Western Albemarle’s boys team knew a quick start could make all the difference with the limited practice time both Orange and the Warriors had over the past week.

“We thought getting off to a good start was really important,” said Western coach Darren Maynard. “I’ve got to give them a lot of credit, playing at a different time and not practicing, we handled that very well.”

Christian Pierce led the way on the early assault as Western pulled away to a 71-42 victory. Pierce poured in 12 points of Western’s 19 in the first quarter and then settled in to finish with a team-high 17 for the game after the Warriors took a 19-8 lead in the opening frame.

“He helped get us off to a good start and then he went into more distributing mode which is good,” Maynard said. “Then some other people picked up the slack.”

Pierce also hauled in seven rebounds. Dante Crawford had 14 points and 11 boards whle Travis Hester registered 12 points. Stephen Schuler had four steals and four assists in a solid game at the point guard spot.

Garrett O’Shea also came off the bench and played well with nine points. Western cleared most of the bench in the fourth with a comfortable lead.

Orange got seven points out of Spencer Jarrell and six out of Travis Braxton
