Western wins girls title while Burruss, Jackson shine; FUMA wraps up boys victory in Fred Harvey Invite

Louisa County freshman Javanique Burruss had a big impact at the Fred Hardy Indoor Track Invitational out at Fork Union, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Lions’ girls squad to the team title as Western Albemarle edged Louisa 60-59 for the championship.

Burruss won the girls long jump by more than two feet with a 18-5.5 foot leap in a squad stocked with Group AAA talent. The freshman then edged her way to a triple jump win by .25 inches over Amira Idris from Group AAA C.D. Hylton High in Woodbridge.

Burruss then helped lead Louisa to a narrow victory over Charlottesville in the 4×200 meter relay along with Jasmyne Johnson, Michelle Best and Nojai Veras.

And to cap the exciting day, Burruss finished second by a tenth of a second to Orange County’s Ashontae Jackson. That gave Burruss a hand in 38 of those 59 points scored by the Lions. Raven Robinson placed second in the girls shotput for the Lions by edging out Charlottesville’s Valerie Washington.

Jackson also won the 55-meter dash to give her a pair of victories on the day.

Amanda Jordan from Charlottesville finished fourth in the girls long jump. Arlis Adou was the next closest area leaper in the triple with an 11th place jump.

Western got the win thanks in part to Kristin Del Rosso’s second place finish in high jump, Nicole Harding and Kelsey Grupp’s third and fourth places in pole vault, a 4×800 team relay win. Kelsey McClary finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles and Western’s 4×400 team finished second. A one-two finish by cross country standouts Claire Johnson and Katie Farina in the 1000-meter run highlighted the Warriors’ day.

FUMA picks up title at home

While Louisa and Western went toe-to-toe for the girls title, Fork Union rolled to the boys title by 16 points over Atlee High.

The Blue Devils got a big boost from a one-two finish in the 1600-meter run by Wojciech Czernek and Josh Morris. Morris finished second more than eight seconds in front of Western’s Andrew Jennings, the third place finisher.

A win by Rich Dyer in the 55-meter dash and by Jameal Turner in the 55-meter hurdles also gave FUMA a lift, and Turner also snagged a second place finish in the high jump while teammate Shawn Schimper finished fourth in the event to score points.

Kadarrius Bruce of Fluvanna County (sixth place team finish) won the triple jump by nearly two feet while Jonathan White finished second in pole vault for the Flucos and Zach Lawson took second for Western. FUMA’s Phillip Parmly and Fluvanna’s Chance Parmly finished fourth and fifth respectively in the same event.

Western got a third place finish from Andrew Jennings in the 1600-meter, and a second place from Jimmy Taylor in the 3200-meter run as part of a seventh place team finish.
