In a meeting between to the last two squads with flawless Jefferson District records, defending champion Western Albemarle went on the road and handed Powhatan a 3-1 loss on Tuesday night, 25-20, 15-25, 25-6 and 25-22.
The Warriors fell in their first set against the JD newcomer, but rebounded to play their two strongest games of the night in games three and four to take a 2-1 lead before closing out a tightly contested fourth set.
Maggie Kooken, Laura Bergin and Katie Rossberg all had 15 kills each to pace the Western offense. Rossberg added a pair of aces and blocks. Kooken had 19 digs. Maggie Spindel was big upfront, coming through with three blocks. Marina Clark was strong on defense adding 13 digs. Setter Riley Martin poured in 42 assists while libero Marin Crowder tallied up 40 digs.
Western (13-5, 4-0) plays Fluvanna County at home on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
