Western knocks off Turner Ashby, moves to 2-0

It might be time to start asking whether Western Albemarle is a legitimate contender for the Jefferson District title.

The Warriors added a major notch to their belt by knocking off Turner Ashby, a traditional power and a 2008 playoff team, in dominant fashion, rolling 23-9 over the Knights.

Western’s defense dominated for the second week in a row, forcing four turnovers, including an interception each by Cody Davis, Dom Losco and Tyler Ward, and yet another fumble recovery by Hunter Mitchell. That’s Mitchell’s third recovery in just two games — he had a pair of recoveries against Waynesboro including one for a touchdown.

In fact, the Western defense surrendered just seven points, and they came late in the fourth after a blocked punt gave the Knights great field position. The other two Turner Ashby points came on a safety. That’s two games and just seven points scored against Western’s defense.

Mitchell Parks, Davis and Losco led the Warriors in tackles.

Stephen Schuler led the offensive charge with a 235-yard, three-touchdown performance. The senior connected with Losco twice and Christophe Drapanas once while going 7-for-15.

Western takes on Albemarle on the road next Friday.
