Western girls soccer cruises past Charlottesville

Western Albemarle girls soccer jumped out a first half lead and never looked back Thursday as the Warriors rolled to a critical 5-0 victory over Charlottesville.

The win completed a season sweep of the Black Knights for the Warriors (12-1), who knocked off CHS 3-1 in the first meeting.

Western managed to control the pace from the start, creating opportunities early but struggling to find the back of the net. That changed when Julia Berg and Erin Meier connected down the sideline and Katrine Berg finished to put the Warriors up 1-0. Berg scored again later in the first for a 2-0 halftime lead and went on to notch a hat trick with the second and third goals both assisted by Julia Berg.

Sofia Benedetti scored off a corner to make it 3-0 in the second half, followed by Berg’s hat trick capping third and Cordelia O’Connell notching the fifth goal off a Kayleigh Long cross.

The Warriors travel to take on Fluvanna Monday night while Charlottesville will look to bounce back the same night against Louisa County at home.
