Western baseball rolls past Orange County

The Western Albemarle baseball team scored 21 runs in their game against Charlottesville Tuesday night. Wednesday, the Warriors’ bats didn’t slow down as Wetern surged to a 13-3 victory on the road against Orange County.

“It was a carryover from last night where we scored 21 runs against Charlottesville, that’s a lot of runs, up and down our lineup 1-9 we have a chance to do some damage,” said Warriors coach Skip Hudgins.

Jacob Lively got the scoring started in the first inning for the Warriors with a two RBI single to give his team a 2-0 lead. In the second, Luke Craytor came up with an RBI double, and another runner scored on a throwing error to make it 4-0.  Craytor ended the night going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Then in the top of the third, the Warriors broke the game wide open, scoring four more runs to make it 8-0, including another Lively RBI single.

“It helped us a lot in the game, we jumped out early and didn’t wait for a couple innings in the game defensively and offensively and I think it was a really big thing to get started like that,” said Lively, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored on the night.

On the other side of things, Andrew Barrese was able to keep the Hornets’ bats pretty quiet to start the game, going three innings and giving up one run while striking out seven batters, before Craytor came on to pitch the rest of the game.

In the third inning, the Hornets got on the board with an RBI walk from Rebel Fretwell that scored Aiden Baker to make it an 8-1 game. Baker also came in on the mound for the Hornets late in the third to try to stop the bleeding with the Warrior offense.

The Warriors weren’t done scoring though, as they got a run in the fifth on a balk and a run in the sixth on an RBI single from Isaac Sumpter to make it 10-1.  Sumpter ended the night going 2-for-4 with an RBI, a hit-by-pitch, and three runs scored.

The Hornets did anything they could to try to battle back into the game, but couldn’t quite get hat big inning they needed to make things interesting. In the bottom of the sixth, they were able to get a couple more runs on the board with an RBI single from Baker and an RBI walk from Kyle Johnson to make it a 10-3 ballgame.  Baker ended up going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and two steals.  Luke Jarrell also chipped in for the Hornets with a 2-for-3 night with a walk and a steal.

But the Warriors proved to be too much, tacking on some more runs to help seal their victory.

Both teams get a short break from games over the next few days, with the Warriors will travel to Monticello next Tuesday, while the Hornets will host Albemarle the same night.
