Western avenges loss to Charlottesville

Western Albemarle’s girls basketball team came out on a mission Friday night, intent on avenging a loss to Charlottesville early in the year.

It didn’t take the Warriors long to take control.

Western rolled by feeding the post against the Black Knights, riding Ellen Shaffrey and Carolyn Schneller down low to a 48-35 victory.

“We didn’t want to get swept by anybody,” said Western coach Kris Wright. “It was a little shaky the first two or three minutes but after that I thought we played really well.”

Shaffrey poured in 15 points to lead all scorers and made it a double double with 10 rebounds. She also had three blocks and a pair of steals while leading the charge.

“It was balanced, we were getting the looks we want to get,” Wright said. “We thought we could get paint shots because in the first we got them. We just needed to make more of them.”

Schneller had 12 points and four rebounds while Kelsey Swanson had six points and five assists. Raven Ward rounded out the effort with eight rebounds and five blocks.

Western took a 10-point lead into the break and held Charlottesville to just 15 points before the break.

Charlottesville got 11 points from Ellie Von Storch and eight points from Olivia Levine.
