Weekend Warriors: Monticello, Fluvanna volleyball shine on Saturday in Richmond

Both Monticello and Fluvanna County’s volleyball teams had a tough start to their slate at the Virginia Volleyball Showcase in Richmond, but Saturday remedied Friday’s problems as both teams reversed 0-2 starts to go 2-2 on the weekend.

Fluvanna battled Langley Saxton on Saturday and won 3-1 on the strength of Kayla Walker’s 15 kills and two solo blocks. Mandy Kline also came up with nine kills while Mia Loyd had a five-kill, three-block outing against Saxton.

The Flucos followed that with a 3-0 win over Westfield highlighted by a 30-28 opening game. Loyd shined with nine kills and five blocks while Walker and Kline had nine kills each. Hannah Miller, who had five kills in the Saxton win came up with seven against Group AAA Westfield.

Monticello dispatched Tallwood High from Virginia Beach and Midlothian High from Chesterfield on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Tallwood and a 3-2 thriller over Midlothian. Christine Archer led the way for the Mustangs in both wins. Archer had 10 kills against Tallwood while Kate Geldmacher had 12. Sidney Walker paced the Mustangs at the service line with seven aces.

Archer followed that performance up with 16 kills and 16 digs against Midlothian in the five-game match. Erica Watson had 19 digs in that win, while Amanda Powell had 35 assists.
