Seven local wrestlers will battle for a spot on the podium at the VHSL state championships Saturday. Here’s a rundown of who’s still alive and how day one shook out for everyone else.
At the Class 3 state championships, Western Albemarle’s Jake Jackson advanced to the heavyweight final where he’ll face Tyler Michael of Fort Defiance. Jackson lost to Michael 3-1 in an overtime in the region tournament in a hard fought match. Michael went on to win the region title by pin.
At the Class 4 state championships, Louisa County’s Austin Mills 145 pounds won his first round match, won in the quarterfinals and then fell in the state semis by an 11-8 decision. Mills will finish no lower than sixth, could end up in third place as he wrestles through the consolation bracket Saturday. At 126 pounds, Louisa County’s Mason Morris wins 7-2 in first round over Sherando’s Heath Rudolph, fell in quarterfinals and then won first consolation match by pin, second by pin and the third by an injury default. Morris will wrestle for third place Saturday. At heavyweight, Cameron Hornsby won his first round match by pin, then won in quarterfinals with a 6-1 decision before falling in semifinals by pin. He’ll wrestle Saturday, will place no lower than sixth, could place as high as third.
At the Class 5 state championships, Orange County’s Riley Rudnick won his first round match by pin, lost in quarterfinals then reeled off two consolation wins, will wrestle Saturday and finish no lower than sixth. At 138 pounds, Orange County’s David Steigler lost his first round match, won first, second and third round consolation. Will finish no lower than sixth, could finish as high as third. Orange’s Chance Bowers lost his first round match at 145 pounds, then won first round consolation match by pin and then won by two more major decisions. He’ll wrestle Saturday, will place no lower than sixth, could finish third.
Other First Day Results
VHSL Group 5A at Oscar Smith and Kellam High
113 pounds: Orange’s Blake Wilson lost his first round match, won consolation first round over Glen Allen’s Blake Mazanec by pin, then fell in consolation second round.
132 pounds: Orange’s Nicky Benner lost his first round match, won consolation first round over Stone Bridge’s Eric Frames by major decision 11-1, then won second round consolation by another major decision 14-4 before losing in third consolation round.
170 pounds: Albemarle’s Brock Shorten won his first round match 3-2 over Thomas Jefferson’s Clayton Reppert, lost in quarterfinals and after winning one consolation by a 9-3 decision, got knocked out.
220 pounds: Orange’s Truth Wilson lost his first round match, won once in consolation by an 8-6 decision and then knocked out with a loss.
VHSL Group 4A at Churchland High
106 pounds: Louisa’s Drake White lost his first round match, won consolation first round by major decision over Lake Taylor’s Tyler Lynch, won again in second round with an 8-6 sudden victory win before losing in next consolation round. Charlottesville’s Aiden Lewnadowski loses first round and consolation by forfeit.
170 pounds: Louisa’s Ben Froschauer wins first round match 7-3 over Great Bridge’s Jacob English, lost in quarterfinals and then won by sudden victory in first consolation match, lost by major decision.
220 pounds: Louisa’s Cole Cutright lost first round match, fell in first round consolation 8-4.
152 pounds: Charlottesville’s Isaac Kenner fell in the first round, then dropped consolation round match by injury default.
VHSL Group 3A at Churchland High
106 pounds: Western’s Jack Overstreet wins first round match by pin over Warren County’s Brandon Mason, knocked out in consolation round after quarterfinal loss. Fluvanna’s Tyler Haynes losesfirst round by a pin, then by injury default in consolation first round
113 pounds: Monticello’s Jackson Perry wins first round match by major decision, then falls in quarterfinals, wins first consolation match 7-5, loses next match.
120 pounds: Western’s Beighley Austin loses first round match, loses in consolation match
126 pounds: Western’s Andrew Rakes loses by tech fall 15-0 in first round, loses by major in consolation round. Monticello’s Andrew Watson loses first round and then consolation round
132 pounds: Monticello’s Ryan Smith loses first round and then in first consolation round. Fluvanna’s Mason Justus loses in first round and consolation round, both by pin.
138 pounds: Monticello’s Christopher Houchens wins first round by pin, lost in quarterfinals, drops first consolation match.
145 pounds: Monticello’s Julian Johnston wins first round by pin, falls in quarterfinals and drops first consolation match by an 11-9 decision.
170 pounds: Western’s Keegan Riley falls in first round by tech fall, loses first round consolation by a 5-3 decision.
195 pounds: Western’s Bryan Bradley falls in first round by pin, wins first round consolation by pin and drops second consolation round match.
VHSL Group 2A at Salem Civic Center
113 pounds: Marques Blakey loses by pin in first round and drops consolation match.
220 pounds: Christian Corbin loses by pin in first round, drops first round consolation by pin.
