VHSL State Golf Roundup: Albemarle takes third, Monroe fourth, Western sixth

With Jack Bruns putting together a typical Jack Bruns performance and Cooper Ezell getting on track at Monday’s Class 5 state championship at Magnolia Green Golf Club in Richmond, Albemarle’s golf team had enough of a one-two punch to put itself in the mix for a state title.

The Patriots finished third in the Class 5 championship, carding a 323 to tie Hickory in that spot and finish 28 strokes behind champion Deep Run’s 295.

Bruns notched a 69 to lead the way for the Patriots and finish third, just two strokes behind Michael Brennan, the individual champion from Tuscarora and the 2017 VSGA junior player of the year.

Ezell knocked six strokes off his score in the region tournament to finish with a 78, tying him for 19th in the individual tournament. Dexter McKean finished with an 86 while Jack Kelly and Robert Brozey each finished with 90s and Mia Liang carded a 98.

Class 3

William Monroe’s golf team took fourth place in the Class 3 state tournament at Williamsburg National Golf tournament, notching a 333 as a team that left that 23 strokes off the pace set by state champion Abingdon’s 310.

Western Albemarle snagged sixth place in the state field with a 341.

Miles Lesko’s 78 led the way for the Dragons and tied him for eighth individually while Parker Woolford had an 83 and Shane Coleman had an 84. Hayden Gibson finished with an 88 to round out the four scorers while Grant Woodson had a 90.

Nathan Vance’s 81 led Western while Luke Vance had an 84, Brian O’Dea had an 87 and Zach Smith notched an 89. Clay Bright had a 95 and Aiden Halloran had a 96 for the Warriors.

Monticello’s Jake Huffman tied for 17th individually after qualifying on his own at the Region 3C tournament.
