Tennis Roundup 6.1.17: Western’s Thomas/Ix earn state tournament berths

Western Albemarle’s Daniel Thomas has a particularly busy schedule ahead of himself next week.

 

Thomas is headed to the Group 3A state singles tournament and he and Alex Ix also clinched a spot in the Group 3A doubles titles with Region 3A West semifinal wins Wednesday. With the Group 3A team title also on the line after the Warriors won the Region 3A West team title, Thomas has a chance at three state titles next week.

 

Thomas beat Blacksburg’s Matty Drucker, rallying from down 5-1 in the first set and won 7-6, 6-4. In the doubles battle, Thomas and Ix rolled past Drucker and teammate Roehan Prasad 6-3, 6-2.

 

Thomas and the Thomas/Ix tandem will square off for region titles Friday starting at 1 p.m. at Southern Virginia University.

 

Albemarle boys tennis doubles squad advances

 

In the Region 5A North singles tournament at UVa Wednesday, Albemarle’s David Sun beat Andrew Mok of Robert E. Lee in the quarterfinals but fell in three sets in the semifinals to Erick Rivas of Stonebridge.

 

In the doubles tournament, Jack Stalfort and Sun combined to beat Rishit Roy and Arun Singh of Thomas Jefferson, winning 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.

 

Sun and Stalfort will play for a state tournament bid in the semifinals Thursday.

 

Western girls representatives fall

 

In the Region Region 3A West girls semifinals, Tyler Blalock of Abingdon defeated Hannah Kearns of Western Albemarle 6-0, 6-1. Then Blalock teamed up with Maggie Campbell to beat Kearns and Anna O’Shea 6-2, 6-0 in the region doubles semifinal.

 

Tuesday, Kearns defeated Abby Pearl of Lord Botetourt in the Regional singles quarterfinals 6-4, 7-6 (3).

 

In the doubles quarterfinals, Kearns and O’Shea defeated the Alleghany duo of Beirne/Porterfield by scores of 6-0, 6-2.
