STAB’s Carter Morris hits for cycle as Saints beat Covenant

Carter Morris was near perfect for St. Anne’s in her 11-strikeout pitching performance against Covenant Monday afternoon and hit for the cycle at the plate with an inside-the-park home run serving as her round-tripper.

Morris’ performance and some offense from Bri Tinsley combined to spark the Saints to a 13-3 victory in just six innings.

“[Carter] is definitely a competitor, and she is not really a natural pitcher, that’s not what she wants to do,” STAB coach Terry Lippman said. “She’s really supposed to be playing shortstop but she is also our best pitcher so she stepped up to be a team player.”

Morris dominated at the plate and in the circle with 11 strikeouts and the cycle at the plate with a double in the first, a triple in the second, an inside the park home run in the fourth and a single in the sixth.

However, Covenant struck first with an RBI triple by Aliece Carney in the top of the first inning to put the Eagles on top.

STAB quickly returned blows and never looked back as Morris kept Covenant’s bats quiet and Tinsley terrorized the Eagles on the basepath. The Saints’ five run second inning ultimately sealed their first victory of the season.

Then, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Morris belted a rocket into right field, allowing her to prance around the bases to extend the lead to 10-2.

The next inning, Tinsley followed suit knocking in her own inside-the-park homerun to make it 11-3.

Finally the sixth inning rolled in and the mercy rule was called as the Saints defeated Covenant 13-3 for their first win of the season.

“This is the first time that we have actually played more towards our potential,” Lippman said. “I think that now they are seeing that they will be more confident as we go and play St. Catherine’s on Thursday.”

STAB hope to build momentum as they travel to Richmond for a rematch against St. Catherine’s of Thursday night.

“St. Catherine’s came out here and played a good game, they played a full seven innings,” Lippman said. “We had a couple errors there and we kind of let the game get into our heads. When we do the things we can do and make the plays we can [make], we can rebound from anything.”

Covenant will look to turn their season around against Trinity Episcopal Thursday night.
