Shelton’s 34 leads Louisa past Powhatan

According to the VHSL record book, only four players have knocked down more 3-pointers than the performance Chris Shelton put on Thursday night in a 92-56 win over Powhatan.

Shelton exploded for 34 points including 10 3-pointers, which is likely a school record if the VHSL record book is any indication. The VHSL record for made threes in a game is 14 by Travis Viers back in 2009, but Shelton’s outing would be tied for fifth-best all-time in the state with at least five other players who’ve knocked down 10 shots from beyond the arc in a single contest.

Meanwhile, the Lions got the job done against the Indians to open Jefferson District play at 1-0. Xavien Hunter chipped in five 3-pointers of his own for all of his 15 points, Isaac Haywood scored 11 points and Reggie Cosby had 10 including two 3-pointers. Jarett Hunter and Terry Neely had nine points each for the Lions.

Louisa built a 41-33 lead by halftime but with four of Shelton’s 10 3-pointers coming in the third, really pulled away after the break, leading 73-37 at the end of the third. Powhatan managed just four points in the third.

Kyle Williams led Powhatan with 13 points while Devin Van Natter finished with 11.

The Lions host Monticello Tuesday night.
