Road Test: STAB girls win Boo Williams Bronze Bracket

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team takes on a tall task each year the Saints head to the Boo Williams Holiday Tournament. This year was no exception as the Saints battled schools from all over the Tidewater and STAB proved up for the challenge, prevailing again Saturday with a 56-44 victory over Class 6 Ocean Lakes in the Bronze Bracket Championship.

The win completed a three-game run through the bracket that included an overtime win over Class 5 Bethel and a hard-fought victory over Class 4 Woodrow Wilson.

Eighth-grader Kymora Johnson continued her stellar start to her varsity career, providing a steady hand for the Saints throughout, scoring 13 points while grabbing seven rebounds in the title game. She’d notched eight points and five boards in the opening round and another 13 points in the semifinal en route to earning Bronze Bracket MVP honors.

Joviah Winkey was a big contributor as well, with 15 points and six steals in the title win over Ocean Lakes as the senior point guard continued a recent hot streak — she had 19 points, five steals and nine boards in the semifinal win over Bethel.

The win pushes the Saints to 10-1 on the season. They’ll host Sidwell Friends Saturday before jumping into LIS play January 8 against Trinity Episcopal in Richmond.
