Region Sweep: Albemarle’s boys and girls win Region 5D titles

Albemarle boys and girls swimming rolled Friday in the Region 5D championships in Stafford, sweeping the region titles behind some big-time individual and relay efforts. 

 

The girls team piled up 417 points to easily outpace runner-up Independence’s 228 points. 

 

Grey Davis set the pace for the Patriots with a pair of victories in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke while swimming a leg of the region title-winning 200 medley relay and the runner-up 400 free relay. 

 

Sara Wells took third in the 500-free and fourth in the 200-free. Cameron Smith took second in the 100-breaststroke and fourth in the 200 IM. Melissa Alms also had a big day, finishing as the runner-up in the 500-free relay and third place in the 200 freestyle.

 

Sophia Yu took fifth in the 100-fly and eighth in the 100-free. Maddie Wells finished seventh in the 50-free and ninth in the 100-fly. Rachel Murray took fifth in the 100 free and 10th in the 50 free and Eve Czirjak took seventh in the 100 breast and ninth in the 200 IM. Avery Huang took third in the 100 fly and eighth in the 200 IM. 

 

Smith, Yu and Murray rounded out the title-winning 200 medley relay team while Yu, Murray, Huang and Alms teamed up to win the 200 free relay. Davis, Smith, Avery Huang and Alms combined for the 400 free relay that took second place.

 

Kylin Gahlmann took eighth in the 500 free and 10th in the 200 free. 

 

On the boys’ side, Albemarle scored 361 points and beat runner-up Independence’s 309-point total. The Patriots’ strong relay performance led the way as Albemarle finished as the runner-up in 200 medley relay with Teddy Cross, Josh Hodges, Lance Elmore and Luke Velasquez on the swim. They also took fourth in 200 free relay with Velasquez, Hodges, Tanner Kidd and David King combining for the effort and capped the meet with a win in the 400 free relay with Elmore, Kidd, King and Cross swimming the four legs. 

 

Cross had a strong day individually with a pair of region title wins in the 100-freestyle and 50-freestyle while King won a pair of races himself with victories in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, giving the Patriots a sweep of the four individual freestyle race titles.

 

Kidd took third in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 free, Elmore took fourth in the 100 fly and fifth in the 50 free. Hodges took fifth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM. Connor Marshall took seventh in both the 500-free and 200-free. Aiden Ding took 11th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100-breaststroke. 

 

The Patriots will return to Stafford February 19th for the Class 5 state swimming championships.
