Orange’s Mthethwa keeps rolling, Hornets hold off Madison

Orange County’s Sihle Mthethwa is absolutely on fire now, and he showed no signs of slowing down Tuesday against Madison County.

Mthethwa, who is averaging 36.7 points per game right now, scored 38 against the Mountaineers as the Hornets held off a strong fourth quarter charge by Madison to pull off a 68-66 victory.

Mthethwa was efficient while pouring it in too, shooting 64.7 percent from the field including 5-for-9 from beyond the 3-point line while going 11-for-17 at the line.

“(We) were really just attacking, getting downhill, kicking out and knocking down shots today,” Mthethwa said.

After a slow third quarter, Madison picked up the pace and scored 24 points in the fourth, with Jackson Taylor, Dean Breeden , Taylor Fincham and Kody Dobyns all contributing. But Orange’s 11-point lead from the end of the third proved to be enough, with Mthethwa hitting enough free throws (5-for-9) and Alex Coppola knocking down a bit three to keep Madison at arm’s length. Coppola finished with 12 as the only other Hornet in double digits. Destin Bray chipped in nine boards for Orange while Markelle Jackson had six boards. Coppola also had three assists.

Fincham led Madison with 21 points including a 5-for-5 night at the line while Breeden scored 12, Dobyns had 11 and Taylor finished with 10.

Both squads face a quick turn around as Orange travels to Crozet to take on Western Albemarle Wednesday night while Madison will head to Rappahannock to try and complete a regular season sweep against the Panthers.
