Orange County wins shootout with Courtland

Orange County’s offense had some known quantities back as playmakers, particularly quarterback Paul Poirier.

But even with those expectations, ringing up 28 first half points in a 42-35 win over Courtland is impressive to say the least.

The Hornets outscored the Cougars in the shootout with Poirier throwing for 239 yards and two touchdowns with a sterling 17-for-18 completion ratio while also scoring three times on the ground with 51 rushing yards. The first four scores, two in the air, two on the ground came before the break. Poirier scored from five yards out, then hit Will Lewis for a 27-yard touchdown and Lewis again for a 7-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead after a Bryant Chiles two-point conversion.

Freshman Sheldon Robinson led Orange with 97 yards on seven catches and Lewis hauled in Poirier’s two touchdown throws while picking up 84 yards on four catches on the night.

Orange led 28-14 at the half and then Courtland cut the lead to 28-20 just before Chiles ripped off a 64-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 35-20. Chiles also led the Hornets with seven stops on defense.

Thomas Pierce had five tackles while JaePharoah Carpenter had four stops.

The Hornets will travel to take on Culpeper next week looking to move to 2-0 on the year while Courtland continues a tour of the Jefferson with a road clash against Louisa County.
