Orange baseball upsets Halifax in Region 4D quarterfinals

Orange County baseball hit the road Wednesday night to face No. 3 Halifax in the Region 4D tournament.

Trey Clatterbuck made sure the Hornets didn’t waste the long road trip.

Clatterbuck threw a complete game shutout to vault Orange to an upset 3-0 win in the region quarterfinals and put the Hornets just one win away from a state tournament berth.

Clatterbuck scattered six hits and allowed just one walk while striking out five. That lone walk came in the bottom of the seventh and he escape that minimal threat by inducing three ground outs.

Clatterbuck did all that work without the help of a lead much of the game as Orange finally broke through in the top of the seventh when Luke Jarrell doubled to score Brett Mawyer. Bryant Chiles followed with an RBI single to score Jarrell and then Chiles stole home during the next at bat.

Clatterbuck made sure that 3-0 spurt stood the test with the scoreless bottom of the seventh.

Chiles went 2-for-3 on the night at the plate.

The Hornets will head south again on Friday for a 6 p.m. clash with No. 2-seeded Jefferson Forest who beat Pulaski 8-0 in another Region 4D quarterfinal matchup.
