Nelson County falls to Bath at home

Nelson County’s football teams fell into a hole and even with a solid second half effort couldn’t climb out, falling 35-23 to Bath County in the Governors’ season opener.

Quarterback Trey Shaver’s 5-for-8, 116-yard performance with a pair of touchdowns and 88-yards and two scores on the ground led Bath’s effort. Connor Call rushed for 107 yards on 26 touches. Bath built a 14-0 lead before Nelson got on the board and early in the third quarter, Bath extended its lead to 28-7 on one of Shaver’s touchdown runs.

Nelson answered with George Brown, who threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns in his debut at quarterback while rushing for another 43 yards on 11 touches. The bulk of Brown’s passing yards came on two big plays, a 72-yard touchdown toss to Devon Cousins and a 50-yard toss to Brice Wilson. Jamel Rose hauled in a four-yard TD pass for the Governors.

Wilson and James Johnson led the Governors on defense with six stops each. Wilson had one tackle for a loss.
