Monticello volleyball holds off Fluvanna

Last year, Fluvanna and Monticello’s volleyball teams were fighting it out for the top spot for the Jefferson District in the Region 3C tournament.

Based on the first meeting, they might be in for more of the same.

After Monticello took a two-game lead over thes Flucos, Fluvanna bounced back to force a fifth game. The Mustangs collected themselves after that push though and squeaked out a 15-13 win in game five for a 3-2 match victory over the Flucos.

The two teams were essentially dead even throughout, with Monticello winning game one 25-20 before battling to a 29-27 win in a marathon game two. Allie Cognata’s 13 kills and 10 digs led the way for the Mustangs while Meghan Walin got in the mix with eight kills and nine digs. Ellie Quick had a monster all-around game with five kills, six blocks and 13 digs while setter Jewell Pugh triggered the offense with 26 assists and 10 digs. Allison Davis had three kills and five blocks while Nadja Beauford chipped in six digs defensively.

Fluvanna responded by winning game three 25-16 in the most dominant single game win of the night before winning 25-23 in game four to send the match to a decisive fifth. Christina Walker’s 13 kills sparked the Flucos offensively while Lindsey Ward piled up 36 assists on the night. Katie Morris and Khamare Steppe each had six kills while McKenzie Moore and Savannah Quinn notched five kills each.

The Flucos will look to bounce back on the road at Turner Ashby Thursday while Monticello plays TA Wednesday night before taking on Albemarle on Tuesday in a critical Jefferson District match.
