Monticello softball rallies early against Albemarle

There was no stopping Elizabeth Kenney, Hannah Shifflett and Haley Shifflett on Tuesday. The trio combined for 11 hits in 15 at bats to pace the way for a 12-3 win for Monticello on the road against Albemarle.

Monticello was sitting one out away from ending things early but a late rally from Albemarle forced the Mustangs to play a complete game. While the Patriots were able to rally in the fifth to extend the game, a double from Albemarle’s Kelly Graves with 1-out went squandered in the sixth and a leadoff walk to start the seventh was followed with the Mustangs retiring the side and wrapping up the win.

The Mustangs raced out to a 12-0 lead getting multiple runs in the first four innings.

Monticello went up 3-0 to start things off in the first with Kenney and Emily Clifford each getting singles and Hannah Shifflett coming up with a 2-run double. Hayley Shifflett hit an RBI double in the next at-bat.

The Mustangs rallied for four runs in the second with a 2-run single from Jessica Williams, Clifford scoring on an error and Hannah Shifflett delivering an RBI single to make it 7-0.

In the third, Monticello got a 2-run double from Emily Clifford. The fourth saw Hannah Shifflet hitting another double and scoring eventually on a passed ball and India Irving coming up with an RBI single to inflate the lead to 11-0. In fitting fashion, the Mustangs went up 12-0 when Hannah Shifflett hit a triple and then Haley Shifflett hit an RBI single.

Albemarle got a 1-out single from Kristen Clark in the sixth to start its lone rally of the game. Logan Friesen came up with a single in the next at-bat. A sacrifice fly from Shannon Shisbey put the Patriots on the scoreboard. Kasie Pace then came up with a 2-out 2-run single and cut the lead to 12-3.

For Albemarle,  Friesen was 1-for-2 with two walks. Pace was 1-for-4 with two RBI. The Patriots only had five hits, but they drew six walks.

Hannah Shifflett finished with a line of 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Kenney was 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Haley Shifflett was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Clifford was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lost in the mix was Clifford’s win in the circle with six innings pitched. She gave up one hit while striking out seven batters.

Monticello will host William Monroe on Monday while Albemarle will host Culpeper, also on Monday.
