Monticello baseball edges Western to win second-straight

Monticello baseball took a four-run lead over Western by the middle of the third inning and from there, the Mustangs held on tight, tacked on one more critical run in the fourth and beat Western Albemarle 5-4.

The Mustangs put together four doubles as a team, with Dylan Both ripping one of those to score Kevin Jarrell in the third inning. Booth scored on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs that 4-0 lead.

That’s when Western went to work, scoring twice in the bottom half of the fourth with Domecq doubling in Wyatt Hull after Chris McGahren’s sacrifice fly scored Devin Powell. After Tyler Walker singled in Sid Carver in the fifth for Monticello, Western bounced back again with Hull singling in Luke Tenuta.

That left Western down 5-3 and that score held up until the seventh, when Western tried to rally again, with Domecq hitting a double with one out to score McGahren. The Warriors then promptly loaded the bases, but Monticello reliever Grayson Bush induced a ground ball and Jarrell and Dylan Zimmerman turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat and the game.

Jarrell led the offense with a 2-for-3 night with an RBI and two runs. Walker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, Steve Morgan went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Dylan Booth went 1-for-3 with two RBI.

The Mustangs leaned on Sam Lewis and Bush on the mound in the win, with the two pitchers combining for five strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs.

Western’s Garrett Payne struck out seven in the start but surrendered seven hits and three earned runs. Domecq went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. The Warriors left nine runners on.

Western will look to bounce back Tuesday on the road against Orange County while the Mustangs host Louisa County at 6:30 p.m. the same night.
