Monroe boys tops Woodstock to set up big senior night

William Monroe handled it’s business to set up a huge Friday night. The Dragons rolled to a 65-44 win over Central Woodstock to keep within a game of striking distance from George Mason heading into the last regular season game of the season.

“We had three straight really good games and we were a little sloppy early, but after that everything clicked,” said Monroe coach Mike Maynard. “We had command almost the whole game, really pounded it inside and played well as a team, trusted one another.”

Monroe was able to build up a nine point lead in the first quarter before making it a double-digit difference going into halftime, up 13. The Dragons padded their lead by six more points in the third quarter and worked up to its 20-point margin in the fourth and kept it that way for good.

Markell Williams had a huge game underneath with 23 points and 11 rebounds, as did Markel Faulkner who added 11 points and 13 boards. Jordan Gentry hit four 3-pointers en route to 16 points. Austin Batten had five points to go with six assists.

Monroe (14-6, 10-2 Bull Run District) hosts first place George Mason on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Dragons fell to the Mustangs on the road earlier this season by just four points. Mason has one BR loss, coming in December to Madison County. With a solid playoff resume going into senior night, Monroe can further its cause by forcing at tie at the top of the standings heading into the district tournament next week.

“This is going to be a huge game,” Maynard said “It’ll be exciting, should be a packed house.”
