Macdonald’s double double powers Orange past Powhatan

If Orange County boys basketball is going to take its next step forward, it’s going to have to find ways to win games like their road clash with Powhatan Friday.

Clearly the Hornets are starting to figure that out, edging the Indians 79-76

Orange freshman J.J. Macdonald led the way, putting together his first career double double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Macdonald was 7-for-11 from the field including three 3-pointers. Kyrie Carter got going too with 19 points and seven boards.

Macdonald and Carter’s production allowed Orange to overcome an explosive 40 points from Powhatan’s Deven Van Natter. Van Natter nailed six 3-pointers, went 14-for-14 at the free throw line and scored his 1,000th career point along the way.

The Indians led by one at the half, but both teams exploded offensively in the third with 28 points from the Hornets and 23 from Powhatan.

Sihle Mthethwa and Jireek Washington each had three assists with Mthethwa scoring 10 points. Chance Williams nabbed three steals while Jaylen Alexander had 13 points chipped in four boards.

The Hornets will travel to take on Charlottesville Tuesday.
