Local wrestlers pick up first round wins

The VHSL wrestling championships are underway with 4A, 3A and 2A squads squaring off in Salem while the 5A qualifiers are in Chesapeake. Here’s a quick rundown on who advanced.

Group 5A 

Albemarle’s Brock Shorten won his first match at 170 pounds and has advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Orange’s Ryan Smith and Dustin Shifflett won their matches at 106 and 195 respectively to advance to the quarterfinals.

Orange’s Kaleb Marshall and Chance Bowers were already in the quarterfinals at 182 and 132 respectively by virtue of a bye.

 

Group 4A

Louisa County’s Mason Morris (126) and Jaret Grimsley (132) advanced to the state quarterfinals with first round wins Thursday.

Louisa’s Tony Thurston (285) and Austin Mills (120) were each region champions and received a bye.

 

Group 3A 

Western Albemarle’s Jack Overstreet (113), Will Davis (145), Jabari Gomez (195) and Jacob Jackson (285) all advanced to the quarterfinals with first round wins. Fluvanna County’s Ian Dillion (160) also advanced with a victory.

Nate Riley of Western Albemarle and Austin Rath of William Monroe were both already in the quarterfinals because of a bye from their region titles.

 

Group 2A 

With only eight state qualifiers, Group 2A didn’t have any first round matches.
