Hayden explodes as Western beats Covenant

Western Albemarle absorbed a pair of losses this week, one a devastating finish against Jefferson Forrest on Thursday where the Warriors melted down in the closing minutes.

But clearly Western has a short memory and the ability to bounce back as the Warriors overcame another big night from Emily Maupin to beat Covenant 52-47 Saturday night for Western’s first win of the season.

Eleri Hayden went for 29 points, six rebounds and six steals. She poured it in throughout the game, with 28 of the 29 coming from the field. Elizabeth Coffman notched 10 points and seven assists. Shannon Moore contributed in a number of different ways with seven points, six boards and five assists.

Covenant countered with Maupin going for 25 points and Sara Meakam finishing with 14.

Western’s girls (1-2) will look to get to .500 Tuesday when the Warriors host Fluvanna County. The Eagles will travel to take on Steward the same night.
