Hackenberg’s big night sparks FUMA past Powhatan

Every season, with a short preseason practice period and a lot of new faces in the fold, Fork Union takes a couple of weeks to get things sorted out.

If Friday’s 41-20 victory over Powhatan is any indication, that early waiting period is over.

The Blue Devils rolled past the Indians, with Christian Hackenberg piling up 228 yards and five touchdowns through the air with an efficient 16-for-25 outing. For the second week in a row, D.J. Randle El was his favorite target with seven catches for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Randle El got in on the act early with a 22-yard touchdown that gave Fork Union a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, the Blue Devils were in control, leading 28-7 with another Randle El touchdown, a Denver Wright catch and a 75-yard Isaiah Wright kickoff return providing the scoring. Powhatan’s lone first half touchdown came from Christian Higuchi.

Jay Gafford got the FUMA ground game going with a 103-yard performance on just 13 carries. He also had a 31-yard touchdown catch as well midway through the third quarter. Fork Union struck again in the first six seconds of the fourth when T.J. Dudley scored on an 11-yard pass from Hackenberg. Powhatan added scores from Ray Brown and Dion Drew later in the fourth, but Fork Union had already put too much distance between the two squads for the Indians to really rally.

Fork Union heads back into private school play this week with a Friday night clash with Paul VI in Fairfax. Powhatan will head south to take on Greensville County.
