Fluvanna girls stay perfect in district play with win over Monroe

Even if it doesn’t actually show in the standings, the gap between the Fluvanna County girls basketball team and the rest of the Jefferson District seems to grow each week. On Tuesday, the Flyin’ Flucos took down another opponent in the middle of the standings with their 61-31 win over host William Monroe.

“Tonight was just one of those nights where everything was falling in place for us,” said Fluvanna coach Chad White. “But we’re going to have to keep working at everything on both sides of the court so we can make sure we keep our edge.”

Mia Loyd had yet another big game for the Flucos with her 22-point, nine-rebound, six-assist, five-steal performance. The sophomore imposed her will all over the court, getting most of her 22 points on layups and free throws, but spent as much time looking to create opportunities for her teammates as she did for herself.

“She’s a very unselfish player,” White said. “Almost to the point that she can be too unselfish.”

Loyd’s elder sister, K-anna scored 10 points and landed six rebounds while Millicent Williams came off the bench to contribute 10 points and 4 rebounds.

“The fact that we played together as a team helped a lot,” Williams said. “We have really great team chemistry. Tonight we knew were we all were all over the court and since we practiced our game plan pretty hard, we were pretty set.”

The Flucos held the Green Dragons to single digit points in the first two quarter and went into the half with a healthy 18 point lead. The strong defensive effort continued for the second half as the JD’s top squad gave up 10 points in each of the next two frames.

Monroe, just one of many teams clustered together in the middle of the District, was hoping to play the Flucos more competitively, but the Dragons’ coach, Philip Lamb, felt that ulterior motives got in the way.

“I thought that when (Fluvanna) came out and smacked us around a bit we just backed down and you can’t do that,” Lamb said. “When you allow personal agendas to be more important than team agendas, then you have nights like this.”

The Monroe offense struggled to garner any kind of momentum especially early on. However, Kaitlyn Roach found moderate success with both her inside and outside shooting. The sophomore led the Dragons with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Teammate Shawnterica Cochran chipped in seven points in the loss.

Fluvanna (10-1, 5-0) will host Goochland on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

William Monroe (6-8, 2-4)  heads to Western Albemarle on Friday at 6 p.m.
