Fluvanna girls knock off Rustburg, Ivory reaches 1,000 career points

Neveah Ivory and Fluvanna County’s girls basketball team went to work on Rustburg Friday night in the Region 3C quarterfinals early. The Flucos jumped out to a 12-point first quarter lead and then went to work on making sure it held up.

“It was really important to keep our composure so we wouldn’t get down,” Ivory said.

Clearly they kept their composure, because the No. 5 seed Flucos knocked off No. 4 Rustburg 59-51, putting Fluvanna just a win away from the state tournament. That path goes through No.1-seeded Spotswood Tuesday.

“We haven’t been this far in a long time,” Ivory said. “We play as a team and we play together and we just didn’t want it to end.”

Ivory, just a junior, poured in 25 points to lead the Flucos on offense and late in the game surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career.

“I knew I was getting close, it was my goal to get there as a junior,” Ivory said. “It was pretty exciting and emotional but I kept it together, I didn’t want to cry.”

It was also the first region tournament win during the Ivory era for the Flucos and they got it with an offense that had more productivity than usual as Mya Wright notched 13 points and Jules  Shepherd added 10. With Khamare Steppe chipping in seven, Fluvanna had a wealth of offensive options that made life tough on the Rustburg defense.

Fluvanna built on that 20-6 lead and led 39-20 by halftime. Rustburg started to put things together in the third and cut into the advantage, but Ivory hit five of her eight fourth quarter free throw attempts to keep Rustubrg at arm’s length.

The Flucos will take on Spotswood Tuesday night with a state tournament berth on the line.
