Fluvanna boys roll past Rustburg in Region 3C first round clash

In the first round of Region 3C Tournament action, Fluvanna’s boys basketball team hosted Rustburg Friday.  Things went very well for the Flucos from the jump as they led from start to finish and seemed to have complete control of the game with contributions from everyone from the opening tip, taking the game 75-50.

“We’ve always had a very deep bench, but with the first five that we have also, it’s hard to take them out and rotate them through but we do have a very talented lineup,” said Fluvanna coach Heath Bralley.

In the first quarter, the Flucos jumped out in front big early on, starting the game on an 11-0 run.  Kobe Edmonds played a large role in the Flucos taking a big early lead, scoring seven points in the first quarter. He finished the night with a team-high 32 points. Bobby Gardner also helped energize the team in the run, scoring four points, creating turnovers and throwing down a one-handed jam.  He ended the game with 12 points.

The Flucos never looked back after the first quarter as they rolled in the second.  The defense played stayed active and forced a ton of turnovers by the overmatched Rustburg squad, which led to tons of points.  Fluvanna went on to take the second quarter 20-4, and take a 33-14 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Edmonds continued his outstanding play.  He scored 11 points in the quarter with three three-pointers. Lance Bruce also provided some key contributions with five of his 11 points coming in the third quarter.

“It seemed like my teammates were just finding me, I was getting into spots and my teammates were getting to the basket and forcing Rustburg to come help, and I was knocking down the shots,” said Edmonds.

The Fluco offense never took their foot off the gas pedal, and by the time the final buzzer sounded, they had cruised to a 75-50 victory.

Key contributors for Rustburg included Avery Dixon with 17 points and JJ Johnson with 12 points.

While the Flucos rolled to victory in this one, the team knows that they have plenty of things to clean up in order to prepare for the next game.

“Our quickness helped, but we did not play very good position defense like we’re supposed to,” said Bralley.  “I think the guys realized that they could get a little freestyle tonight and get away with it, but we will not get away with that going forward.”

With the win, the Flucos move to the Region 3C Tournament quarterfinal and they’ll play at Wilson Memorial on Tuesday.
