Fluvanna boys beat Wilson to earn shot at state tournament berth

Fluvanna County’s boys are, officially, on a run.

The Flucos, seeded No. 7 in the Region 3C tournament, beat Rustburg handily last week in a first round game and Tuesday night they knocked off No. 2-seed Wilson Memorial 71-65 to advance to the region semifinals, one win away from a state tournament berth.

Bobby Gardner exploded for 32 points in the win over Wilson Memorial, knocking down four 3-pointers and scoring 10 points in the fourth to get the Flucos over the hump.

Fluvanna led just 36-34 at the break and shook off a slow third quarter to score 23 points in the fourth quarter. Kobe Edmonds finished with 11 points on the night including a couple of late free throws to ice the game while Blaise Silverman scored 10 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter.

Fluvanna hit three first quarter threes in the win, with Kenyon Smith, Edmonds and Gardner knocking down the long balls that made it clear the Flucos weren’t going to roll over easily. Four more 3-pointers in the second helped push the Flucos to that narrow halftime lead and Lance Bruce, who finished with nine points, hit a third quarter three. Fluvanna finished with nine made 3-pointers.

The Flucos will travel to Lynchburg Thursday night to face Liberty Christian Academy in the Region 4D semifinals. Winner earns a trip to the state tournament.
