Fluvanna baseball upends Orange County

The Jefferson District’s baseball season gets wilder every night it seems and Porterfield Park in Orange Tuesday was no exception.

Fluvanna County’s baseball team jumped out to a three-run lead and never looked back Tuesday to grab a 6-1 victory over Orange County for a season sweep of the Hornets.

Orange just laid claim to first place in the Jefferson Monday in a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Western Albemarle.

Shaun Holyfield and Kyle Algieri combined on the mound to push Fluvanna to the win with Holyfield scattering four hits and two walks while striking out eight in 5.2 innings. Algieri closed the game with a shutout 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Fluvanna’s Jacob Critzer had a double for the Flucos and knocked in two runs while going 2-for-4. The Flucos’ Colby Deforge also knocked in a run. DaShon Carter stole a base, hit a triple and scored twice. Ryan Groome went 2-for-4 with a run and stole two bases. Kevin Ward hit a double.

Orange couldn’t counter the Flucos’ early assault, managing just one run in the sixth with Tre Smith scoring. Five errors also complicated the defensive effort as three unearned runs piled up for the Flucos.
