Fluvanna baseball scores in bottom of seventh to fight past Orange

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Algieri came to the plate for Fluvanna. Just minutes ago, he’d managed to finally extricate the Flucos from a nightmarish top of the seventh inning where Orange County scored three runs to tie the game up. This time Algieri delivered at the plate, singling into left field to bring home the game-winner and set off a celebration for the Flucos in an 8-7 victory over the Hornets.

Algieri’s single ended another nailbiter of a Jefferson District game as the league continues to produce wild finishes and well-played contests in one of its deepest years in recent memory.

Jacob Critzer, Kevin Ward and Algieri led the Flucos with two hits each with Ward also knocking in three of the Flucos’ eight runs. Matthew Gibson went 1-for-2 with an RBI and both Algieri and Brant Wood had doubles.

Nathan Gentry threw 6.1 innings and struck out 10 for Fluvanna while surrendering four runs.

For Orange County, Cannon Davies gave up six runs on seven hits in four innings of work. John Dawson went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Tre Smith, Allen Seeley, Bradley Hanner and Davies each knocked in a run. Dawson and Seeley also each hit doubles.

The Flucos will look to build on the big late-inning win facing Albemarle Friday night while Orange travels to take on Western Monday at 6:30 p.m.
