Flucos sweep Albemarle wrestling meet

Fluvanna’s wrestling team put together a big day Saturday at the Albemarle dual tournament, rolling to a 5-0 record against a solid field.

The Flucos scored more than 50 points in each win, taking Western Albemarle 65-18, Waynesboro 60-24, William Monroe 60-9, Ford Defiance 61-15 and host Albemarle 54-27.

“Our kids really gelled together,” said Fluvanna assistant Paul Chirico. “They were really rooting for each other and we had some young kids come out and get their first win.”

Five Fluvanna wrestlers went 5-0 on the day, with Christian Chirico going unbeaten at  152 pounds, Justin Zimmerman at 103, Logan Walls at 171, Ben Lacey at 215 and John Wharton at 125 pounds.

Fluvanna’s state champion, Willie Crawford was solid all day, but dropped a highly anticipated, hard-fought battle to Fort Defiance’s Aaron McMillian, who came down a weight class to take on Crawford. McMillan prevailed in a tight match, 7-5.

The Flucos will face another critical test Wednesday in a match at Monticello that features two other top contenders for the Jefferson District’s team title, the Mustangs and Louisa County.
