Flucos bounce back, outgun James Wood

According to Fluvanna coach Chad White, one of the Flucos’ problems against Page County Tuesday was pretty simple.

“We didn’t have our legs under us yesterday,” White said. “We weren’t able to run.”

That wasn’t a problem on Tuesday.  Though trips to the free-throw line were rare a day after the Flucos missed 17 from the charity stripe, that didn’t stop them from charging past the outgunned Colonels, 60-42, in the consolation round of the Dragon Holiday Ball at William Monroe High. Fluvanna rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominant performance, riding a solid defense and some impressive interior play to the victory.

James Wood was hounded into a bevy of early turnovers, and the focused Flucos stormed to an early 17-5 lead behind K-anna Loyd’s seven quick points. The senior leader finished with 13 on the day.

Despite tough efforts by forwards Heather Armel and Shannan Thorne, the Colonels weren’t able to keep pace with Fluvanna’s up-tempo play. Three fastbreak buckets – two by scoring leader Mia Loyd, who finished with 21 to lead all scorers, and another by freshman point guard Ashleigh Harris – helped push the lead to 19 by the end of the third quarter. Sophomore Millicent Williams had a strong outing as well, piling up 10 points. Throw in the fact that the Flucos seemed to get a hand into every James Wood passing lane, and the outcome was sealed.

White was pleased with the effort he got from his squad.

“Everything starts on defense,” he said. “We aren’t blessed with players we can go through (to score) all the time. That’s why we’ve got to work on the defensive end.”
