Covenant girls win D-II girls cross country title

Covenant’s girls cross country team has produced some solid runners in the past, but none of those groups of athletes have done what the Eagles’ 2015 squad did Friday.

The Eagles won the first VISAA Division II state girls cross country title at Covenant, edging out Walsingham Academy by six points with five top 26 scoring performances counting and a sixth for good measure.

Not only did the Eagles win the championship, they did it with eighth graders leading the way. Eighth grader Ella Dalton clocked a 20:01.77 to take third place overall while another eighth grader Emma Lawson took 14th overall. From there, some of the Eagles’ older runners got in the mix with sophomore Ali Haynes taking 21st, senior Kathryn Grant took 23rd and junior Emma Breault took 25th. Eliza Baker took 26th for the Eagles.

Tandem Friends took 19th overall in the race with eighth grader Meredith Frazee taking 61st.

Boys VISAA D2 Race

In the boys Division II race, Covenant’s boys took sixth overall, with Chase Carson finishing 10th to set the pace for the Eagles. Fellow junior Andrew Rapp took 17th.

Tandem took 10th overall, with freshman Luka Van der Plujim’s 54th and Logan Jones-Wilkins’ 61st overall to lead the way.
