College updates: Mike Brown shines for Liberty, Archer helps stun Virginia

Monticello had a big night Friday against archrival Albemarle in a 38-7 victory, and a Mustang alumnus provided something of an encore on Saturday.

Michael Brown, Monticello’s do-it-all quarterback who graduated back in the spring of 2007, proved he could play a little wideout in Liberty’s narrow 33-20 loss to West Virginia. Brown hauled in 157 yards and a touchdown on 11 catches while also picking up a rushing touchdown.

Brown, who earned All-Central Virginia first team honors as a quarterback as a senior, stood out for the Flames, leading FCS school Liberty in an upset bid that the Big East’s Mountaineers overcame with a barrage of field goals.

The redshirt sophomore has been listed as a quarterback at Liberty during his career but apparently is too good of an athlete to keep off the field, prompting head coach Danny Rocco to utilize him at wide receiver.

Another Jefferson District product, Bradley Starks of Orange County, had a pair of catches for 34 yards for West Virginia in the contest.

R.J. Archer update

Saturday wasn’t a bad day at all for R.J. Archer, a former Albemarle signal-caller. In fact, he just might never forget it.

In case you have been living under a rock in Central Virginia, Archer helped lead FCS squad William and Mary to a 26-14 victory over Virginia.

The senior threw for 184 yards and a score on 23-for-44 passing. He also rushed for 46 yards in the win.

Brandon Caleb update

Former Fork Union star linebacker and wideout Brandon Caleb recovered a first quarter fumble for Oklahoma on a muffed punt by Brigham Young. Caleb’s Sooners fell to the Cougars though — losing 14-13 after Heisman Trophy quarterback Sam Bradford left the game with a shoulder injury.
