Blue Ridge beats Roanoke Catholic

Blue Ridge’s boys basketball team’s depth wasn’t in doubt this year, but what the Barons did Friday with offensive balance is impressive even by their lofty standards in a 76-53 win over Roanoke Catholic.

Five different Barons ended the game in double figures and one more wasn’t far behind as Devin Walker scored 17, Maliq Brown had 14 points, Robby Matos had 11, Shannon Shimango had 12 and Camden Brewer had 10. Thrown in Houston Emory’s eight and it’s clear the Barons are comfortable with any number of players shouldering the offensive load together.

Brown finished just a couple of stats away from a triple double and wasn’t that far off from a quadruple double, adding nine rebounds, eight blocks and six assists to his 14 points. Walker had six assists and five steals to go with 17 points and Matos had five boards and three assists. Emory chipped in three blocks.

The Barons’ win sets up an exciting tilt Tuesday as Blue Ridge goes toe-to-toe with St. Anne’s-Belfield in St. George at 6 p.m.
