Basketball roundup 12.4.18: Monroe boys, STAB girls win

After Orange County’s boys basketball team knocked off William Monroe at home a week ago, the Dragons clearly went to work.

 

Tuesday night, they got a vastly improved result, beating the Hornets 57-50 on the strength of a solid defensive effort.

 

Monroe took a 33-25 lead over the Hornets at the break and the Dragons then shook off a two-point third quarter to put the game away with 18 fourth quarter points.

 

Logan Barbour led the Dragons with 25 points while Alex Kinsey chipped in 17 points. Trevaughn Powell had seven points and Parker Woolford yanked down 11 rebounds.

 

For Orange, Sihle Mthethwa had 16 points and four assists while Chance Williams posted a double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jaylen Alexander scored 10 points.

 

Fluvanna girls beat TA

 

Fluvanna County girls basketball needed a bounce back from a loss to William Monroe last week. They got it against Turner Ashby.

 

The Flucos edged Turner Ashby Tuesday 62-60 in overtime, with Nevaeh Ivory scoring 24 points and Khamare Steppe notching 13.

 

STAB girls beat John Paul the Great

 

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team cruised past John Paul the Great Tuesday on the road to pick up its third win on the season.

 

Vanessa Woodfolk led the Saints with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jovia Winkey posted an unusual double double with 14 points and 10 steals to spearhead the defensive effort. Eighth grader Mo Johnson filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

 

Madison County girls drop Culpeper

 

Madison County’s girls basketball team got rolling and picked up its second win of the season, beating Culpeper 60-32.

 

Abi Tanner and Sabrina Lewis each scored 17 for the Mountaineers to lead the way.
