Basketball Roundup 12.19.18

Orange County boys basketball is starting to find some consistency on the defensive end.

The Hornets picked up its second Jefferson District win of the year with a 62-56 victory over Monticello Tuesday night, locking down the bulk of the Mustangs’ lineup and holding on for the win down the stretch.

Jireek Washington notched 12 points for the Hornets with six steals to spearhead the defense while Kyrie Carter posted 11 points and nine boards. Beyond that duo, Chance Williams and Sihle Mthethwa scored nine points each while Marshall Williby had eight points.

Monticello got 24 points and 11 rebounds out of Ben Drake, but Orange limited the rest of the lineup short of double digits.

The Hornets will face Madison County Friday on the road while Monticello squares off against Charlottesville Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Louisa beats Massaponax

Louisa County’s explosive, multi-dimensional offense kept clipping along Tuesday night as the Lions beat Class 5 squad Massaponax 72-62, with Chris Shelton’s 21 points leading the way. Xavien Hunter finished with 15 points including four 3-pointers and Jarett Hunter notched 14 points. Mark Carter stepped up with 12 points to bolster the dynamic offense.

The Lions were rock solid at the free throw line, going 12-for-15 at the stripe with Shelton going 7-for-8 and Jarett Hunter going 4-for-4.

Khai Sargeant led the Panthers with 18 points.

Louisa will travel to take on Fluvanna in a varsity doubleheader Friday night.

Charlottesville boys drop Fluvanna

Charlottesville’s boys basketball team had three players in double figures in a 75-49 win over Fluvanna, riding a huge third quarter and some increased defensive pressure to close out the Flucos.

Zymir Faulkner led the Black Knights with 20 points, Jake Bowling notched 16 on the night with four 3-pointers and Nick Motley added 10 points in a balanced offensive effort.

Lewis Tate led Charlottesville on the boards with 10 rebounds.
