Basketball roundup 12.17.16: Buckingham, Goochland win at holiday tournament

Buckingham County picked up a big win Friday night at Goochland’s Christmas Tournament, knocking off King William 65-44. King William was 5-1 coming into the contest.

 

Antonio Chambers led the Knights with 17 points while freshman Trevor Kelly finished with 15 points, a career high and Brycen Newby pulled down a career high 17 rebounds.

 

Goochland, meanwhile, beat Blessed Sacrament 74-40 with a huge effort from Jack Twombly leading the way. Twombly had 17 points and 12 rebounds while Quentin Watson had 16 points for the Bulldogs.

 

Buckingham will play Blessed Sacrament Saturday at 2 p.m. while Goochland faces King William at 4 p.m.

 

Fluvanna girls beat Orange

 

Fluvanna County’s girls basketball team picked up a 65-51 victory over Orange County Friday night. The win capped a challenging three-game stretch for the Flucos who beat Waynesboro and fell to Albemarle earlier in the week.

 

Niya Brown scored 20 points to lead the Flucos, with 16 of them coming at the free throw line. She also had seven rebounds and three steals in the win. Nevaeh Ivory finished with 16 points and four steals, shooting well from the field with a 7-for-14 performance. Jules Shepherd had 12 points for the Flucos.

 

Orange’s Erin Ryder matched Brown’s effort with 20 points of her own to lead the Hornets in scoring, also doing her damage at the line going 16-for-25 at the charity stripe. Cooke Sincere had 10 points while Laine Harrington had 12 points on the night.

Louisa County’s boys squad beat Powhatan 85-62 Friday night with Jarrett Hunter scoring 17 points to lead the Lions…. Blue Ridge beat Sanford 75-55. …STAB boys basketball beat Hampton Roads Academy 87-71 with Jayden Nixon scoring 28 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing out eight assists.
