Basketball Roundup 1.8.20: Buckingham boys edge Appomattox, STAB girls and boys snag wins

Buckingham County’s boys basketball team had to fight for it, but the Knights stayed unbeaten and picked up a huge win Wednesday night, edging Appomattox 68-67.

 

Buckingham trailed by three with 25 seconds to play and made a pair of critical steals that led to four points and the win.

 

The Knights needed 21 points from Tae Toney to get the job done, with 10 of those 21 coming in the fourth. Toney, who also pulled down 10 boards to complete a double double, knocked down the go-ahead bucket with 5.3 seconds to play, giving the Knights (10-0) the win.

 

Xavier Copeland scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to post a double double. Amari Toney had another 15 points while Damorrious Holman scored 14 points including four 3-pointers.

 

Buckingham will try and keep its unbeaten run going when the Knights host Nottoway Friday.

 

STAB girls edge Trinity Episcopal

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s girls basketball team got the LIS season started with a 71-64 win over Trinity Episcopal Wednesday.

 

The Saints trailed 47-45 at the end of the third, but surged down the stretch to pick up the win. Mo Johnson scored 15 points and posted a double double with 10 rebounds, five steals and six assists while fellow freshman Maddie Rice chipped in 13 points. Senior Sallie Vick scored 12 points and had six rebounds Sophomore Khamare Steppe had 11 points and seven boards. Sabrina Lewis had nine points and Daija Bennett finished with seven.

 

Bennett and Scottie Hull had three steals each with Bennett also dishing out a pair of assists. The Saints will hit the road to take on Collegiate Friday at 5:30 p.m. before locking up with Virginia Episcopal at home Saturday.

 

STAB boys pick up win in Prep League opener

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s boys basketball team dropped Collegiate 64-59 to pick up a crucial win in the Saints’ Prep League opener.

 

A balanced offensive effort set the tone for the Saints.

 

Malachi Poindexter led the way with 17 points, seven assists and five boards. Justin Taylor had 10 points, three assists and three rebounds. Wayne Yen had nine points and two steals. Nick Reese managed eight point and had a huge night on the boards with 10 rebounds. Ethan DeLaurier snagged eight points and six rebounds. Carter Lang had seven points and five boards and Eli DeLaurier had six points and seven rebounds.

 

The Saints are now 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the Prep League and will host Woodberry Forest Friday night.

 

Goochland boys and girls sweep Central Lunenburg

 

The Goochland boys and girls basketball teams both beat Central-Lunenburg Wednesday night, with the boys winning 60-37 while the girls rolled 75-26.

 

Quincy Snead’s 18 points, nine assists and nine steals as well as seven rebounds left him just a couple of plays short of a quadruple double. Jackson Hoffler had 12 points and James Bell had 10 points and seven rebounds. On the girls side, Victoria Lopez had 13 points and a whopping 20 boards while Gabby Ragone had 11 points, six assists and eight steals and Emmy Paulin notched 18 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
